Bitumen grades

Depending on the crude oil of origin and the refining process, bitumen has very different properties. Classification is therefore essential to choose the product suited to your project. E-Station guides you in this choice.

Penetration grades

Ideal for road surfacing, they are measured using a penetrometer, from the softest (100/120) to the hardest (30/40), with the intermediate grades 40/50, 50/70, 60/70, 80/100 and 85/100.

✓60/70 : the most widely used on the majority of road projects, performing well across a wide temperature range.

✓80/100 : a common grade, suited to specific climates and traffic.

Viscosity grades

VG 10, VG 20, VG 30, VG 40: each grade is suited to particular uses and climates.

✓VG 10 : good resistance to temperature variations, used in cold regions and for spray applications.

✓VG 30 : superior quality and performance for road projects.

✓VG 40 : high viscosity, suited to hot climates and heavy traffic.

Oxidized bitumen, cutback and emulsions

These products are classified according to their production process. Bitumen emulsions (a combination of bitumen and water, anionic or cationic) are safer to handle, easier to transport and ideal for road maintenance: tack coats, surface dressings, micro-surfacings.

Packaging and containers

Since bitumen is highly viscous, its packaging is decisive:

✓Steel drums : the most common packaging, for consistent quality and safe handling.

✓Jumbo bags (flexible multilayer bags) : high strength, low cost, easy to melt directly; the inner liner is consumable and the outer one recyclable.

✓Bitucontainers : heated tanks built into standard container frames, for easier transport by truck and ship.

Transport and logistics

E-Station arranges bitumen transport according to your constraints, by tanker truck, by rail, by sea freight, or by a combination of the three:

✓Tanker truck : for regional deliveries and the last mile to the site or asphalt plant.

✓Train : for large volumes over long overland distances, at optimized cost.

✓Sea freight : for international import/export, via tanker ships or bitucontainers.

✓Combined solutions (multimodal) : truck, then ship, then truck in sequence to deliver anywhere in the world, with temperature maintenance managed throughout the chain.
